Understanding Your Home's Distribution Board

The distribution board — sometimes called the breaker panel — is the point where incoming power splits into the individual circuits that run through your home. Understanding the basics helps you know when something needs a professional look.

What it actually does

Each breaker in the panel protects one circuit, automatically cutting power if that circuit draws more current than it's rated for — this is a safety feature, not a fault, when it trips occasionally.

When it needs attention

A breaker that trips repeatedly, a panel that feels warm to the touch, or a visible burn mark or smell near the panel are all signs that call for an inspection rather than repeated resetting.

Why labeling matters

A well-labeled panel — showing which breaker controls which room or appliance — makes it much faster to isolate power safely during a repair or emergency.

• Know where your distribution board is and how to reach it quickly.
• Don't ignore a breaker that trips more than occasionally.
• Have a warm panel, burn smell, or visible damage inspected immediately.
