How to Choose the Right Paint Finish for Each Room

Choosing a paint color gets most of the attention, but the finish — how the surface reflects light and how well it holds up — has just as much impact on how a room looks and how easy it is to maintain.

Matte / flat finish

Matte finishes hide surface imperfections well and give a soft, non-reflective look, making them a common choice for ceilings and low-traffic bedrooms. They're generally harder to clean without marking, so they're less suited to high-touch areas.

Eggshell and satin

These sit between matte and gloss — enough sheen to wipe clean more easily, without looking overly shiny. They work well in living rooms, hallways, and other everyday spaces.

Semi-gloss and gloss

The most durable and easiest to clean, which is why they're the usual choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and trim/doors — areas exposed to moisture, grease, or frequent contact.
